Death Cab for Cutie made their return to late night television this week with a performance of “Riptides” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, giving fans another preview of the band’s upcoming album, I Built You a Tower.
Frontman Ben Gibbard led the group through a restrained but emotionally heavy rendition of the song, which has quickly become one of the most talked-about singles from the forthcoming record. The performance leaned into the band’s signature atmosphere, pairing shimmering guitars with the reflective tone that has defined Death Cab for Cutie for nearly three decades.
“Riptides” serves as the lead single from I Built You a Tower, the band’s eleventh studio album and their first release through ANTI- Records. The album arrives June 5 and follows 2022’s Asphalt Meadows.
The late-night appearance arrives at a busy moment for the band. Alongside the album rollout, Death Cab for Cutie recently announced an extensive 2026 world tour that will take them across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia later this year.
While Death Cab for Cutie are no strangers to late-night television, the Kimmel performance felt less like a nostalgia run and more like a confident new chapter. With I Built You a Tower only days away, the band appears fully locked into the next era of their career.
