Twenty-seven years later, Enema of the State still feels like the soundtrack to every reckless summer, late-night drive, and pop-punk awakening.

Twenty-seven years ago today, blink-182 released the album that would permanently change the direction of pop-punk.

Released on June 1, 1999, Enema of the State became the band’s breakthrough moment, launching blink-182 from Warped Tour favorites into one of the biggest rock bands in the world. The record introduced millions to the trio’s mix of sarcastic humor, massive hooks, and surprisingly emotional songwriting.

The album marked the first blink-182 release featuring drummer Travis Barker alongside Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge. Barker’s arrival sharpened the band’s sound immediately, helping turn songs like “Dumpweed,” “What’s My Age Again?,” and “All the Small Things” into generational staples.

While blink-182 built their reputation on juvenile jokes and chaotic live shows, Enema of the State also revealed a more vulnerable side of the band. “Adam’s Song” tackled loneliness and depression in a way that stood out sharply from the carefree energy surrounding the rest of the album. That balance between immaturity and sincerity became part of what made the record connect so deeply with fans.

Commercially, the album exploded. It helped push pop-punk into the mainstream at the turn of the millennium and remains one of the defining rock releases of the late ‘90s. Even decades later, the record continues appearing on rock and vinyl charts through anniversary pressings and renewed fan interest.

Its legacy has only grown with time. blink-182 have repeatedly revisited the album during anniversary tours, including performances where they played the record front to back for longtime fans.

Online, fans still debate the album’s best songs and share memories of discovering it for the first time, while younger listeners continue finding the record years after its original release.

Today, Enema of the State feels larger than nostalgia. It became a blueprint for modern pop-punk and helped shape countless bands that followed. Whether it was the humor, the hooks, or the emotional honesty hidden underneath the jokes, blink-182 created an album that still sounds alive 27 years later.
